Concept: creating a cyberdeck out of a Samsung Fold, especially using [[Samsung DeX]]
- Cool trackpad tech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgzGNf6XZJo
- Weird trackpad tech: https://ergonomictouchpad.com/mount_touchpad.php
- Neither r/mechanicalkeyboards nor r/cyberdeck seem to be of very much use
- There's a lot of Bluetooth+trackpad and Bluetooth+mechanical, but *literally no* Bluetooth+trackpad+mechanical keyboards. **Why?**
- Likely design patterns:
- Generic 'multimedia' keyboards (often for controlling e.g. TV setups)
- Custom-built, fully integrated mechie
- One of these little folding portable keyboards - some of them seem really decent quality and experience
- Multiple devices (separate keyboard and mouse)
- Some sort of kludj? For example, just yank the caps & switches from the numpad area, and seat a separate trackpad device in the cavity?
- No dice with USB passthrough - might be "physically impossible": https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/g85m0r/any_wireless_keyboards_with_usb_passthrough/
- So close:
- Per reddit link above - passthrough only works when wired :(

- K600
- Review @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-YEvJv2lj8
- Trackpad isn't *great* - not as good as the K400 or an actual laptop
- Rii K12+
- WAY too small...
- Microsoft All-in-One
- Review @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNQSQYhM7B8
- Doesn't have gestures?
- Corsair K83
- Also has a joystick - pretty rad
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CYXMg0ObYc
- But it's out of stock *everywhere* - eBay had like two for $300-400
- Foldables
- Looks like there's a variety - there's the core one that gets cloned/resold a bunch with the mangled F key (and column), but a variety of alternatives too.
- The one I got is quite a good experience! Just tiny, not very sturdy, and has that weird F...
Other features / facts
- A lot of boards have some slightly annoying form factors, with a lump on the back
- Some have backlighting
# Results
- Went with the Logitech K600
- Chiclet keys / scissor switches are decent
- Trackpad is functional, could be a bit better
- Extra keys e.g. the d-pad and dedicated buttons (mouse clicks, media function keys) quite useful
- Annoying: no on-board function lock - software only (so no dice on a locked-down computer)
- Absolutely room to build a dream product here
# Dream build
## Core
- Mechanical switches, obviously
- Good frame/case: e.g. aluminum (cf. Keychron v4)
- Hot-swappable switches (cf. Keychron v4)
- Bluetooth connectivity, with multiple profiles
- NKRL, obviously
- Trackpad:
- Responsive, but not overly sensitive
- Supports gestures
- Dedicated scroll wheel? Or else dedicated functionality within the trackpad
- Could we do something to make it very travel friendly? Like a lid?
- Function lock
- Some way to switch scroll direction *on board*?
- TL;DR any critical configuration should be doable on board - **zero software dependencies**
- Rechargeable batteries
## More optional
These are ones that aren't critical or that I am explicitly happy to trade off against.
- Keycaps with appropriate labelling
- Wireless charging...?
- RGBLED
- Lightweight

## ⭐ G750: Modded PDA folding keeb

This thing is *awesome*.
# Prose
Today I received a new bluetooth keyboard in the mail. In some ways that's unsurprising: I did order it from Amazon. In fact, there's no surprise at all, but there _is_ hope - hope that it will magically unlock some heretofore... well, _locked_ well of inspiration, productivity, and insight.
I'm not intellectually optimistic about that. I've probably spent >20 hours browsing folding keyboards of various kinds, looking for something that will both fit in a sling bag (which I've also upgraded courtesy of Bellroy) and transform my life. But I _know_ that this isn't causal. I won't just find the right every-day-carry (or 'EDC') setup and then be a different person. And yet the temptation remains, and I continue to browse.
If I had to pinpoint when this particular journey started, it was with buying a Samsung Z Fold 4 phone. In my defense, my then-current smartphone was dying, and I was also between laptops. I think I'd seen some YouTube videos - maybe MKBD or whatever the right acronym is; anyway, from the guy who is now known for traffic violations and wallpaper scams. The Fold seemed to promise a number of features - and more than features, actual use-cases - that were very attractive. For instance:
- Having a larger screen for reading: I'd read on a Kobo on and off, but having an e-reader amount of screen real estate in the same device I had in my pocket anyway? Maybe I could read more!
- More screen for writing and annotating: whether for note-taking, sketching diagrams, or scribbling notes on PDFs, coming with a good stylus, working with that stylus, and providing more screen to work on seemed like a winner. This should theoretically be really useful professionally - maybe I could do more work on the go? Add notes to reports and send more emails while on the train? - as well as for 'extra-curriculars': maybe I could finally get into reading more academic papers? As a sidebar, the stylus experience was not to be underestimated: I'd tried a touchscreen laptop before, but a lot of reasonably priced stylus solutions just sucked.
- Gaming: honestly, I thought this might make for a decent platform for playing games. I obviously wasn't expecting to play my usual Steam fare on it, but I was hopeful that there would either be enough stuff on Android natively or else a workable enough solution (e.g. Steam streaming) that the trade-offs would be worth it.
I think those were the main headings - other things would broadly fit under those. For instance, one reason I got a touchscreen laptop was to make it easier to cart around tabletop gaming manuals. That kinda worked, though I haven't really ended up playing that many tabletop games anyway (foreshadowing, anyone?). My sense was that approximately twice as much screen real estate as a phone would be just enough to make this kind of thing work.
How much did this move pay off?
If I'm honest it's been a mixed bag for me. I _have_ read more, done more note-taking and annotating, and played more games on my phone. I've also spent more time on my phone overall, and often on social media (Reddit, Twitter, etc.). How much of this was because of the Fold, in spite of the Fold, or unrelated to the Fold? We'll need to unpack that later.
But coming back to the keyboard - I bought one folding keyboard (though I can't recall exactly when) and I got enough use out of it that I was now... not _addicted_ to the idea, per se, but I was tantalised. And I'd be lying if I said that people's reactions didn't weigh in at all; people were pretty much universally surprised, impressed, then bemused by my little setup. Someone said (clearly memorably) that it was both awesome and the most "wankery" setup they'd seen. I agree!
To provide a bit of a sense for how much and what kinds of paraphernalia I've tried (taking the Fold as a given):
- Folding keyboard with touchpad + various cases with combinations of kickstands, stylus holders, and other bits and pieces.
This setup worked pretty well so long as I was actually carrying everything, had a desk or similar, and up until some part of the case gave up (whether kickstands or pop sockets losing stiffness, or stylus holders breaking, or something else). Overall still easier
- The previous, packaged into a sling bag
Better! (When I was sporting the sling, or had it tucked into a larger bag.)
That's basically it. This latest attempt - a full-sized keyboard with a little gutter the device can sit in - loses the fits-in-a-sling-bag portability, but integrates keyboard and stand, which should work much better around the house at least. I tell you what: having a newborn changes your usage patterns for this kind of thing. We'll see how this plays out.
# Round 4
## Custom armature
Inspired by the device gutter - let's finally think about designing & fabricating something custom?

Oh look - here's some semi-relevant products straight off Amazon:
[Option 1](https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08ZNDNMD3?ref=emc_p_m_5_i_atc&th=1): flat, no hinge - wouldn't work if you have an acute angle between rear keyboard plate and surface (see diagram above).
![[Keyboard quest-20241228180759500.png]]
[Option 2](https://www.amazon.com.au/CloudValley-Adjustable-Continuity-Compatible-Smartphone-dp-B0BHZ35KWF/dp/B0BHZ35KWF?th=1): better, but now the mounting portion is less optimal!
![[Keyboard quest-20241228181034944.png]]
*However*, looking at [this review video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKCUlaShykU), you can see that the latter seems to have a screw in the 'laptop' mount. One of the images for Option 1 mentions a set screw, so I *wonder* if you could actually attach the armature & phone mount for Option 2 to the laptop mount for Option 1...
Either way, it looks like both of them are larger than the 19mm I have to work with, so the 'ideal' solution here would need some further modification anyway.

# Final update?
- Attached the Round 4 -> Custom armature -> Option 2 thing to the back of the keyboard
- Superglue was woefully insufficient
- A modest amount of Araldite worked
- [-] #todo Go and get a cabinet handle from Bunnings to Araldite to the keeb! ➕ 2025-01-10 ❌ 2025-02-18
- Gave up on this because we're moving away from this whole approach :(
Ultimately, [[Samsung DeX]] is *so close* to a workable laptop replacement, but just isn't quite. Issues include:
- You just can't have multiple windows of things, e.g. Firefox. This is really annoying for a lot of workflows.
- Keyboard support is *ok*, but not ideal - not just at the Android level, but at the app level (e.g. Firefox for Android doesn't support Ctrl+T for tabs and so on)
- Zoom at least, and other video calling apps probably, don't play well with this. It didn't respect phone orientation for the cameras, so I was unable to use it as a webcam happily - without either (a) getting a different phone stand, or (b) blocking a portion of the portable monitor by mounting the phone to the keyboard-mounted arm...
On hardware - I also got a portable monitor, which is actually great, but now I'm back to carting around a screen + a wall wart to plug into
- Phone plugs in to screen using Volta magnetic cable
- This is actually insufficient power to run it standalone, apparently. I don't think that's the cable's problem - probably on the phone end, if I had to guess (capable but not communicating it?)
- Screen plugs into wall, passthrough charges the phone
- That means there's two cables looping around on the desk
- Phone is on a small plastic stand in landscape mode - which creates problems with use as a webcam per above.
Overall, just a few too many frictions! And having now flashed Fedora onto my old laptop, I'm getting pulled back into the laptop lifestyle... and eyeing a Framework.
